ZUNOW(ズノー)50mmF1.1の研究は戦争中の昭和18年からスタート。当時の日本海軍が夜明けや夕暮れ時の航空探索用に、従来のものをはるかに上回る高速レンズを計画し、帝国光学研究所に製作を命じた。帝国光学工業（東京中野区大和町）の社長鈴木作太、技術部長浜野道三郎（レンズ研磨の専門家）の両氏は五万枚の設計図を作ったと言われ、十年がかりでやっと完成した。発売は1953年（昭和28年）。浜野氏設計の5群9枚のレンズは初期型と言われ、レンズ後面が著しく突出しているのが特徴で、通称ピンポン玉と呼ばれている。ライカＬマウント、コンタックスマウント、ニコンＳマウントのものが作られたが、このレンズはかなり珍しいニコンＳマウントの初期型レンズである。

初期型が販売開始されたころ日本光学から国友健司、八洲光学から藤陵厳達が入社。初期型の改良に努め、1955年（昭和30年）に後期型が発売された。後期型の製造番号は約5400番台から。この後期型は、初期型の特徴であり使いにくいとあまり評判の良くなかったレンズ外部に飛び出したピンポン形状を改め、レンズ内部に納めたフラットな後群となっている。同時に初期型の改修も開始したため、製造番号上は初期型であっても、レンズ後部がフラットになっている固体も多数存在する。
1954（昭和29）年に帝国光学研究所は帝国光学工業株式会社に、さらに1955（昭和30）年にはズノー光学工業株式会社に社名を変更。そのため、5500番台の途中からレンズ前面のリングに刻まれた銘が「Teikoku kougaku」から「Zunow Opt.」に変更されている。

藤陵厳達氏は1955年に写真工業誌でこう語っている。
「レンズの絞り前半はゾナータイプであるが、後半は多年の研究によって生み出された「ズノータイプ」である。従来の光学ガラスを使用して、収差が良好に補正され、バックフォーカスを十分確保したｆ1.4を大きく超えるレンズを設計するための特徴である。
画像の特徴は、開放からｆ2.8程度までは球面収差は残存しており、全体的に柔らかなフレアが見られるが、いずれの絞りにおいても、正弦条件違反量（ＯＳＣ）は小さくコマ収差は少ない。
また像面についても、メリジオナル面とサジタル面の像面の開きは少なく、非点収差も良好に抑えられている。その結果全体的にソフトではあるが、癖の少ない画像となっている。
なお、コーティングにおいても、大口径レンズにおいてはそのレンズ枚数の多さから、自然と透過光が黄色味を帯びることから、従来の青紫系のコーティングを改め、アンバーコーティングに切り替えている。」

このレンズはニコンＳマウントかつ大口径なため、いくつか試したニコンＳ-ライカアダプターではヘリコイドリングの内側にレンズがつかえて入りませんでしたが、今回入手したアダプターではうまく収まってくれました。精度もよく、ライカＭ８の距離計にもぴったりとあっています。レンズの描写は言わずもがなですので、作例をご参照ください。

The research of ZUNOW 50mmF1.1 was started in 1943 under the 2^nd World War. The Japanese Navy planned the high speed lens which exceeded conventional ones by far for the aviation searches of the daybreak and the dusk, and then commanded the Teikoku Kogaku Kenkyujo(the Empire Optics Research Institute) to start the production. Both Sakuta Suzuki, President of the company (Yamato-cho, Nakano-ku, Tokyo) and the Chief of Engineering Department, Michisaburo Hamano (specialist of lens polishing) were said to have made 50,000 design plans, and completed at last in ten years later.

The lens of 5groups 9lenses model which Hamano designed is called an 1^st model, and also it has ha nickname of ‘table tennis ball’ because of the characteristic that the back end of the lens projects remarkably from the end of lens body. Although several type of mount as Leica L mount, Contax mount, and NIKON S mount were made, this lens is a very rare 1^st model with NIKON S mount. When the sales of the 1^st model was carried out, Yoshitatsu Fujioka from Yashima Optics and Kenji Kunitomo from Nippon Kogaku joined the company. They tried for the improvement of the 1^st model, and the new 2^nd model was released in 1955. The serial number of 2^nd model started from 5400^th. This 2^nd model had characteristics to have reviewed the projected back end of the lens called as table tennis ball which received not so good reputation as for the usual usage, and has a flat back end of the lens as other usual lenses. Because the repair of the initial model started at the same time, there are some lenses having the serial number of 1^st model but the back end of lens rear is flat. In 1954, the Teikoku Kogaku Kenkyujo (the Empire Optical Research Institute) changed the name into Teikoku Kogaku Kogyo (Teikoku Optical Company Ltd) and also changed into Zunow Optical Co.Ltd. in 1955. Therefore, the signature carved around the ring in front of the lens had been changed from "Teikoku kougaku" to "Zunow Opt." in the middle of serial number 5500^th.

I tried several Nikon S-Leica mount adapters but failed by hitting the outer lens body and the inner of the adapter as this lens is very large aperture as the Nikon S mount, but finally succeeded with the new adapter which I got this time. This new adapter is very precise and is just coupled with the range finder of M8 correctly.

I arranged photos of full aperture and f5.6 in turn at the first row. I think that you can see a big change in the description. Although it is quite difficult to make a focus on the moving subjects with a coupled range finder camera, and I often have problem to the accuracy especially using with an adapter, this NIKON S-Leica adapter is made very firm, and I can depend on the indication of range finder image of M8 .

You can see shapes of big comatic aberration when I take photos of night view. I become merry seeing such a very gay scene of Coma because of the big size of the bokeh from such large aperture of f1.1. However, the focus part shows quite sharp image as you can see the last photograph.
