Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 Telephoto Lense

Nikon first announced this lens in 1971. The original version of this Nikkor 300mm f/2.8 with a fast maxium aperture of f/2.8 has no ED glass lens elements in its early design. It was also believed the lens did not have any automatic diaphragm and has to be used with its preset mechanism.

The same lens with an ED lens element incorporated into the optical construction was only being introduced between 1975-1976. The focusing ring was an old design with tiny dismond texture. Exposure of the early ED version also required to be done at shooting aperture. The minimum paerture is a f/22. The lens has two aperture preset rings. The minimum focusing distance is about 11 feet. It uses a 6 elements in 5 groups design and the front filter attachment size is 122mm. Ths lens weighs over 3 kg.

Lately, with a stroke of luck, I came across an auction sale of such an early Nikkor telephoto lense type. The owner generously granted me permission to use the images here. The version has an inclusion of an aperture/focusing knobs each on the lens barrel. Although it ws indicated as an ED version which I have no basis to confirm the source. Here is the original posting at the auction: " ... Nikon 300mm 1:2.8 ED lens manual focus Serial 604065 rare type 2 pre production fast telephot lens with Ed glass and two preset focusing rings that allow setting fixed focus points in the focus range of the lens .Lens was made for and introduced at the Montreal 1976 Olympics along with the Nikon F high speed camera...." -douglas-
