Just got this lens. These are tests shot on the walk home from the post office.
All shot wide open, no lens shade, minimal PP.
Shot on a Canon 60D.

Kreuznach is a city in Germany where company Schendier was founded Wink

Great shots! The Xenar is a wonderful lens design, I use my 105mm a lot.

Same design as the Tessar, right?

It certainly renders a lot like my CZJ Tessar 2.8/50, same bokeh.

A Tessar same as a Xenar? Embarassed Embarassed

I thought the Xenar was a 4-element Tessar type and the Xenon a 6-element double-gauss type, easy misunderstanding to make given the naming with the 'ar' ending.

It does render a lot like my CZJ Tessar though.

Xenar bokeh, so unique.
I love your first shot!

According to Schneider about their Xenar: "Designed as four-element, three-component systems, ..."

http://www.schneideroptics.com/info/vintage_lens_data/large_format_lenses/xenar/

AFAIK only a limited (period) lenses with the Xenar name are 5-elements, built like the one in the pictures kds315* shows.
So probably the lens Kram shows the excellent results of is a Tessar-like indeed.

Thanks guys. Klaus tell me more about the 105mm! 2.8? What mount? Is it rare and spendy?

Just shot with it for a few hours and lemme tell yas- this lens is the shizznit!

I'll post some goodies over the weekend but not only is it the sharpest lens I own wide open, but the color rendering is superb and the bokeh dreamy. It's my new favorite.

Today I shot more images wide open than I have in my 30 year career!

I understand your enthousiasm, colours and the bokeh are nice.

The bokeh on the early series look great, but the last couple look like my cheap Canon 50/1.8.

You really made me try my Xenar 2.8/7.5cm on very old folding Lisette. Anyone tested it already?

We see loads of 50mm lenses presented in this forum. I always want to know what any particular lens offers over another, so what is it about this lens that sets it apart from other (more common) 2.8/50mm lenses?

Hi Woodrim.
What really surpised me was the coulours rendering and above all the sharpness of this lens.
I never had so detailed pictures before with other 50mm lenses.

These photos especially :

cropped 100%

cropped 100%

It is really sharp to my eyes, my CZJ Tessar 2.8/50 is also sharp but not to the same level as this Xenar.

Olivier, thanks for the great samples and links. You clearly show the strengths of this lens.
For me what sets it really apart is the sharpness wide open, the impressionistic bokeh and the superb color rendering.

Thank you Mark.
I hope it answers to Woodrim's question.

Do any of you know what size hood this lens takes? Seems close to 49mm but my Pentax hood will not fit.

Great now there is another one I want but probably can't afford...... Laughing

PostPosted: Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:24 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

If it's not a 49mm hood then it will probably be 52mm, surprised it's not 49mm, most 50mm lenses are.

Can be found for not that much with a bit of searching, not that uncommon.

PostPosted: Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:41 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

OK, after taking a closer look it seems like it is 49mm but the Pentax shade will not screw on. Different thread apparently.

The glass is quite recessed and it does pretty well with flare but I would love to have a hood to optimize it. Any suggestions?

PostPosted: Sat Oct 22, 2011 4:45 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The pitch should be 0.75mm I think, all the 49mm hoods/filters I have fit all my 49mm thread lenses, I reckon the filter thread ring must be ever so slightly damaged hence it won't screw on.

Hi Adent.
Make a search for an Edixa Mat Reflex and you will have the pleasure to find very good bargains.
Very often, standard lenses sold with this camera body are Schneider Kreuznach 2.8/50.

Here is one with a Schneider Kreuznach Xenar :
http://www.leboncoin.fr/image_son/165956717.htm?ca=17_s
It is asked to make an offer.
I just sent him a message asking wether it is still to sell.

Here there is an Edixa Mat Reflex with an Iscotar 2.8/50 for 20€.
Rino said that Isco can be of the time of the Schneider company, thus can have the very good yield of xenar 50/2,8.
I made an offer and wait for the answer...

On *bay, I found a nice set with a Xenon 1.9/50 and a Westromat 2.8/50 (kind of Xenar).
21h50mn to go and 29.70€ till now.

and here is a nice price for a Xenar 2.8/50 :
